The popular claim that America was founded by Christians is largely true, but it must be balanced by this truth as well: Several prominent Founding Fathers were active Freemasons.
Freemasonry fundamentally contradicts core Biblical doctrines. Christianity identify Free Masons as “heretics” because they claim that all monotheistic religions as equally valid ways to know God. They deny the exclusive lordship and atonement of Jesus Christ and teach moral self-improvement as the way to reach the afterlife, instead of by God’s grace.
Here are the most notable Founding Fathers known to have been Freemasons: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Paul Revere, and Alexander Hamilton –– Chief Justice John Marshall, Revolutionary General Nathanael Greene, and Henry Knox were also active Masons.
The most important American Christian founder in our country is George Whitefield. Whitefield was the undisputed superstar evangelist of 18th-century America. During the height of the First Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s, he became what many historians consider America’s very first national celebrity. It is estimated that roughly 80% of all American colonists heard him preach in person at least once. — He preached that salvation required an intense, personal transformation—what he called being “born again”—rather than merely sitting quietly in a pew.
Whitefield made seven major preaching tours across America between 1739 and 1770. By traveling the length of the Eastern Seaboard and drawing huge audiences everywhere he went, Whitefield united the 13 colonies with a common Christian faith. Without his unifying message it is doubtful that the Revolution and our Constitution would have happened.
George Whitefield is undoubtedly America’s greatest Founding Father.
